February was chosen as, "Negro History Week", now more commonly referred to as, "Black History Month" (also known as: "African American History Month") by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926.

The month of February was chosen as this honorary celebration, as it was in honor of Frederick Douglass's birthday, as well as the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln. Two men of much influence within the black culture.

I am hopeful that this month is not the only occasion persons brief themselves on the richness of the people and events that give purpose to this unofficial holiday.

Of course, celebrate & embrace the marked month, as there was much fight to land "privilege" in earning calendar recognition, but; let not a recognized day, week or month mark meaning to who you are as a person and/or a culture ~ know and love your history :)

Howlin' Wolf ~ 10 June 1910 - 10 January 1976

Listening to him belt his soul is fixating, but; to watch him perform is orgasmic!

The strum of the guitar starts to make its way to the ear; the piano pieces itself in sync, melting its melody with the other - and you just have no idea what to anticipate from this HUGE (6'3, 300lb)man hoovering over his guitar, as his foot starts to tap and he begins to rock silently side to side - up and down....

...and then he starts to moan a tune. (sigh):)

Howlin' Wolf ~ "Ill be Back Someday" (1964)

Chester A. Arthur a.k.a Howlin' Wolf (actually named after the 21st President of the United States) obtained his nickname from his grandfather, as he would tell his grandson stories about the wolves that would come to get him, if he would misbehave.

He was 13 years of age when he was forced to leave his mother's home for refusing to work the plantation, then his uncle as his caregiver mistreated him - leaving Wolf to walk 85 miles, as he set his path to stay with his father and his family.

1930 - Howlin' Wolf meets the legendary blues musician, Charlie Patton, who becomes Wolf's mentor and teacher of the guitar. They would float to various jukejoints playing together, as Patton took Wolf under his wing.

His journey as a musician is a long standing one and such an humble man he was - with money practically falling out of his pockets, he was quite successful. Yet and still, he chose to drive himself gig to gig - in his older model car.

If you have not already watched the Howlin' Wolf documentary, I highly recommend!

It uncovers Wolf, the musician, but also you see "Chester" - the character of this man (I sware I fell in love). :)

A man that was and is adored, may be safe to say; worshipped, by the legendary band: The Rolling Stones (clip below). And many others continue to highlight his music today.

This man is known to many, but not enough!

I am so thrilled Wolf became a part of my world; to have discovered his music and undig the persona of this man through reading, live footage and the documentary recommended below.

My music world is all the better! :) My husband in another life! :)

Rest In Peace. Howlin' Wolf.

I fancy Bill Evans may be my new fascination! :)

I have been slowly gaining an ear of appreciation towards his music these past few months - in conjunction with a few interviews I have read & watched, I find myself becoming - well, a bit obsessed! :)

As all makes sense why I would be so; considering he is known as Miles Davis "brother from another mother" as they shared a unique musical bond and friendship.

I am still in review of the film, "Bill Evans Trio - The Oslo Concerts ", but I will note; it is not only interesting for listening purposes while watching the trio perform, but also sensing the audience and atmosphere as well, as the first half of the film is a concert in 1966, and the other filmed during a 1988 concert.

This day forever holds dear to my heart; for not only the reason of my very own birthday, but to share it with such a great leader that graced this country; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., - I have always felt to be the luckiest girl in the world!

I share his speech (below) as one can never hear it enough; and each listen tantalizes different emotions and resonates in a distinct way. So powerful! So inspiring! SO UNITING!

It was a speech built on great hope and love, for not just a freedom for a minority people; but an adoration, for the ideals of all to bleed together; resulting in the build of a great nation.

Personally, this speech melts my heart in such a happy way! Despite one's own opinion of Martin Luther King Jr.'s ideals, principals and/or leadership during his time; there is no ignoring the passion and great courage King possessed.

Bill Evans was introduced to me in reading Miles Davis autobiography & I discovered what is now 1 of my favorite jazz songs, "But Beautiful" - I just fall in love with this song every time!!!! **

An interview with Evans and his trio (1970) shared below, reveals his cautious; yet confident character, as he articulates his ideas of composition, influences and his definition of jazz music itself.

I was baited by this interview; aside from the conversation itself - the film itself is art! I was intrigued how despite the relaxed atmosphere & portray of Evans - it withheld such sophistication....I think those who watch, will understand why I was so intrigued.

Happy Birthday to Blues Legend ~ Jimmy Reed (9.6.1925 - 8.29.1976)

Jimmy Reed (born as: Mathis James Reed) was born in the Mississippi Delta, September 6th 1925.

A legendary harmonica & guitar player; he was a great influence on musicians such as The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and Hank Williams, Jr.

In 1945, Reed moved to Chicago after being discharged from serving in WWII, where he later signed with Vee-Jay Records (also signed to this label during this time: Memphis Slim & Johnny Lee Hooker to name a few).

At Vee-Jay, Reed began playing again with his dear friend, Eddie Taylor (who taught him how to play the harmonica & guitar) and soon released "You Don't Have to Go", his first hit record.

The combination of bottom string rhythm guitar patterns, harmonica solos, simplistic two-string turnarounds and mush mouthed vocals, was all it took for Reed to satisfy all audiences - making him what we would now refer to as an "pop" artist (Koda).

He had several hits to follow, such as: "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," "Bright Lights, Big City," "Honest I Do," "Going to New York," "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby" and "Big Boss Man".

Reed was also a terrible alcoholic, that became troubling not only to his health, but as well as his career (noted occasions of him blacking out on stage at shows, urinating on stage & forgetting lyrics, etc.). Yet, and still, he managed to withstand a successful run as an artist, with a total of 11 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 pop charts!

In 1957, Reed developed epilepsy; though the condition was not correctly diagnosed for a long time, as Reed and doctors assumed it was delirium tremens. Unfortunately, during this time, Vee-Jay records was on the decline as well - soon closing their doors and leaving Reed as an unsigned artist. It was not soon after, Reed managed to sign to another label, ABC-Bluesway, hen releasing what would be his final record; one of which received HORRIBLE feedback; shunning Reed from ever making any future attempts to perform again.

Reed went unseen & heard,, but during that time, he did stop drinking and sought medical attention to treat his health condition(s), but it was not soon enough.

Jimmy Reed passed on August 29, 1976 in Oakland, California of respiratory failure.

He leaves behind a lot of great music & influence to some of the great artists that still play today. :)

Chazwick Bundick a.k.a. "Toro Y Moi" (means: the bull & me) from South Carolina is only 24 years of age - with already 2 EP's behind him & another due out 9/13 ~ this guy is the sh**! (wink).

Reading: "MIles on Miles" ~ Interviews & Encounters with Miles Davis ❤

So, it is apparent I am indeed infatuated with the man; considering the limitless postings I have on him. Yet, once again, I am won over by Davis's wit and charm! I just completed reading, "Miles on Miles" (Paul Maher, Jr) - a collection of (30) interviews, dating back as early as 1958 & on-going to 98' (just a few years prior to his passing).

Love this! When asked, "I don't know how you see yourself, but you must realize that in some ways you are in a class by yourself.", Miles responds:

"I am (in a class by myself), it's no burden. It's just I can't play like anyone else...I can't do anything like anybody else. I'm just myself. And I don't fuck around with music because I love music" (201).

Davis could astound one with his words, just as he did with his trumpet - never to disappoint. :)
This book captivates the man at best; he POPS off the pages as he shares his thoughts in regards to everything from family, childhood, God, civil rights, and of course - music.

A favorite of mine, "In a Silent Way":

My Artist Highlight ~ Charles Mingus (1922-1979)

I recently watched the documentary highlighting one of my favorite musicians, Charles Mingus - "Charles Mingus: Triumph of the Underdog". (posted below for your viewing)

If you are not already a fan, this documentary will inspire you to grow to love him; or at least his music:).

Charles Mingus Jr., born April 22, 1922 in Nogales, Arizona (raised in Los Angeles - Watts) was a music lover at an early age, as he began studying STRAVINSKY and BACH before the early age of ten! It was at the age of sixteen, that he started playing bass. And it was Duke Ellington that gave birth to the idea of composition for him.

Mingus speaks passionately about his 1st encounter with Duke, as he says:

"I had the right to love Duke...because everyone has a right to tune into something that they love."

"I was twelve years old loving Duke, I turn on the radio and I heard music all my life - and I heard Duke and it pulled me in here (as Mingus touches his chest) in my heart."
"I didn't like him (Charlie Parker) right away....somebody say, listen to Charlie Parker or listen to this or that....I could never leave Duke, because I was born loving Duke...I would go check out what Bird was doing, and he was great.....but I would still chose Duke."

His music was influenced by the sounds of jazz, Spanish, classical - he would never be constrained to any defined form or principles when it came to his music - but as well, just life in general. As his late wife, Sue Mingus explains:

"he was testing people, see how far he could go. And he went far. Most people did not confront him."

And what he did not speak upon (and it is apparent he was very outspoken) he allowed his music to paint the rest. It is evident by his "bouncy", and distincitve compositions, he would not be confined to any one sound, and/or what was sensed to be the "norm" for the genre he has been bound to - jazz.

In reality, he detested the idea of the the term, "jazz" (as did the great Miles Davis :)).

Shown in "Triumph of the Underdog", an interview between Mingus and journalist, he is asked the question on what he feels about the term, "jazz music", Mingus responds:

"like they used to say negro, it's like saying the word "nigger"...(jazz) just a surname for music."

As Sue (Mingus) confirms his broad spectrum of musical influence, she explains, "he never wanted to get stuck....people always want you to repeat yourself."

(I LOVE that quote :))

I concur to the idea, that his sound is unpredictable- one of the reasons I am a huge fan. "Triumph of the Underdog", reveals how the combination of his erratic personality and love for any and all genres of music, managed to heavily influence his own sounds and compositions.

A composer, musician, civil rights activist and a "hopeless romantic" is the man that is exhibited in the film; through the memories shared by his two late wives, peers and counter-parts; as well as his given interviews and performances. His story is a bit "grimy"; no "glitz and glam"; yet and still, there is a love story within it all & his tale is beautiful from the beginning to the saraphic ending.

A MUST SEE! :)

Giving this film 2 thumbs up!

Kevin Spacey is hilarious, as he plays "psychiatrist to the stars" while he copes with the loss of his wife by transforming into a major stoner ~ an awesome view into "La-La Land" as we see the paths of 6 strangers become intertwined & manage to fulfill each other's destiny :).

Humorous, yet a bit dark, as the film highlights the way in which each character finds their way.

The ending is a bit unrealistic (i.g. spoiler: Spacey gives up "self-medicating" himself overnight...) BUT, then again - this is a movie based on Hollywood: Anything is Possible! (sarcasm) :)

Awesome cast includes: Robin Williams and Keke Palmer (she it too cute!)

Overall, it is quite entertaining & well worth a view.

The psychological thriller from the 80's is being featured @ LANDMARK THEATERS - Friday, July 22nd - MIDNIGHT.

Can't say I have seen it (anything by Stephen King makes me nervous & the trailer makes me cringe:0)... but definitely not going to miss a chance to see it on the big screen, on this 1-night only 80's throwback event! :)

The film, directed by the infamous, Stanley Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket) features Jack Nicholson, as a crazed hotel overseer, who goes mad and falls to the idea of murdering his family.

Can't wait (nail biting....) :)

The "Rocumentary" following Beyoncé, as she reveals behind the scenes footage in preparing for her latest released album, "4". Including footage from video shoot, "Run the World", as viewers witness her frustration in finalizing the dance scenes to meet her perfection, her confession of how she is a "work-a-holic" and her explanation of "Papa Knowles" being dismissed from management.

Life as Beyonce.
I am a fan of her ability to maintain such a wide spread audience with her catchy lyrics and amazing studio creations. More so, I continue to follow her in hopes that her song writing will mature to meet her amazing voice that no one can deny she has.

The girl can SING! :) And she is so beautiful!

Summer Anthem of this year - no doubt.

Vid from HOT97, "Summer Jam 2011" (NY), which hosts the "hottest" (*insert sarcasm here (lol) :)**)mainstream rap/r&b artists on the radio. This year was no exception to the quantity (& quality) of music :) I am not a HUGE fan of this scene, but I do heart the dudes on this track (w/ the exception of 1...). Love em' or hate em' - vid clip is nice.

Enjoy.

A few thoughts (we all have them :)):

1. DJ Khaled is on stage because...???? Sure, you produced the track. But, really - who cares.

Everyone feels entitled these days to hold a mic. Next....

2. I am NO hip-hop guru & definetely not a music critic by ANY standards; but, Drake appears to be one of the most educated, skillful dudes out & it does not hurt he LOVES my city! (wink).

His demeanor on stage - confident & cool as he does it. So refreshing! = he is not some ignorant, crazed rapper. Love that!

3. Lil' Wayne. Enough said.

4. Rick Ross aka Teflon Da Don. Shirt off?....OK. I can't lie - it works for me.

The music festival bug has me smitten! I just cannot get enough! :)

The FreePress SummerFest weekend here in Houston, TX last weekend attests - locals will not go ignored much longer when it comes to demanding good talent visit the city.

With so many of the annual music festivals that carry on throughout the country; even so, close to home (i.e. Austin City Limits, South By Southwest), it appears despite Houston being a major metropolitan city - the music scene here goes "under the radar" when it comes to the # of events hosted and the musicians that come our way.

Even still, record temps in Houston of 105 degrees - THOUSANDS of people came out, proving SummerFest weekend to be a success!

Despite the climate - girls were dolled in traditional "Bohemian fest" attire & platforms & the gents were with pipes in hand :) - let's just say.....: The "Woodstock feel" was present. :)

Saturday, the kick off day for the fest - Eleanor Tinsley Park remained flooded with blankets of people on the infamous hill; music lovers flocked towards the MAIN STAGE, for performances by: BIG BOI, BUN B, & SHARON JONES & THE DAP KINGS - early in the afternoon.

A Houston local band, THE TON TONS, to which I had the pleasure of hearing for the first time; rocked the Night Owl Stage a few blocks away! They are definetely a band I will be following to hear again soon.

As the blistering heat finally took a backseat - the electric performances from BEIRUT and WEEN wrapped up day one of the fest.

Close out day proved to not be out done!

CUT COPY was incredible! My first time seeing them perform live & coincidentally, their first performance ever in Houston! I cannot wait to see them again!

(If you have not heard them before, definitely a band to keep on your radar. :)

The crowd went BANANAS as they performed (some of my faves): "Saturdays", "Take Me Over" and "Hearts on Fire". Amazing show they give!

Soon enough, the hill was sardined in for the close-out of the evening, WEEZER prepared to take stage.

Of course, they did not disappoint - giving OVER an hour performance; playing ALL the classics: "Beverly Hills" , "Buddy Holly", " UnDone", and "Island in the Sun".

I am already looking forward to next year ~ getting an opportunity to see more local talent perform and the return of WEEZER (of course :)!)

Time to get back to my "cajun roots" for a mini zydeco fest, as J. Paul & The Zydeco NewBreeds perform, Friday, June 17th , Jones Plaza/Downtown Houston.

Everything kicks off at 5PM for the "Live After 5" event hosted by our local radio station, Magic 102.

If you have never attended one of these events in the past, it is a FANTASTIC way to end a work day - I feel like I am back "in the boot" anytime there is zydeco in earshot! :)

There are not many artist you can appreciate their work and their character- Miles Davis is one for me. I am obsessed with this man!

This interview, 1984, illustrates his , playful, impassive demeanor. The way he can deliver his gratitude in receiving a NAACP award in the same tone, as he later discusses how he takes notice in white woman, and their mayhem over getting laid by a black man - you cannot help but be intrigued.

Davis was definitely present in this interview - as though he was amongst his closest friend; unfolding his responses in what strikes one as he being nothing less than honest.

How can you not admire someone who proclaims, "If I was a fan of myself...which I am (laugh)".

Nothing more I can say about him that has not been said already ~ he was one of the best to ever do it!
I have one of my best friends to thank for introducing me to Davis with the Love Songs album in a car ride home 10 years ago.

Music for my Monday...Ahmad Jamal Trio "Ahmad's Blues"

The music speaks for itself!

I was fortunate to discover this guy a few months back through the mention of the Ahmad Jamal Trio in the biography of Thelonious Monk - I have been a crazed fan ever since!

Miles Davis, it is mentioned, was OBSESSED! Maybe more than the likes of his peers, as Davis recorded heavily in the footsteps of Jamal, with recordings such as: "It Could Happen to You", "Ahmad's Blues" (featured here), "Billy Boy" and a few more.

The "trio" was initially comprised of:: Ahmad Jamal (piano), Ray Crawford (guitar), and Eddie Calhoun (bass).

NOTE: In 1956, Jamal replaced Crawford with drummer, Walter Perkins.

They split in 1962.

However, Jamal continued to re-formulate the trio as members came and went throughout his remaining music career. He is an active recording artist today.

Some Favorite Sidenotes:
1. JAMAL recorded 1958 album, Live at the Pershing Lounge on CHESS RECORDS (same label my favorite, LOVE, late/great, Howlin Wolf recorded with). :)

2. Hip-hop artists such as: Kanye West, DJ Premier from Gangstarr and Jay-Z sampled Jamal's work. ** I'll post some of these later **

Tomorrow, May 19th, he would have celebrated his 86th birthday.

MALCOLM X, also known in his Arabic name - El - Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, born to the name of, Malcolm Little - was an American icon of history.

Not found to be recognized as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is, with a defined national holiday (although some would argue Dr. King's holiday is scarcely recognized itself) - Malcolm X defined history as he fought in search of freedom and equality for African Americans.

Despite his ever-evolving beliefs and ideals - he was a voice of leadership and of great admiration to those that witnessed him; and for many still today.

Personally, I feel his silenced story within school textbooks is a misfortune, but; history cannot be erased - sometimes you just have to dig a little harder to find it. :)

As Malcolm X and Dr. King found flaws in each others ideals, we too can feel the same. However, it is so important to recognize their contribution, along with the many others that came before us - who fought and endured so much more than some chose and/or fail to recognize. We have so many people before us to thank, and sadly, many of us do not know their names or their stories.

I, too, am still on a road of teaching myself about "the forgotten". I hated history class growing up - funny how that changed. But, to know there are so many faces and names I never once encountered & have been such contributors to our "great" America.

Fascinating.

This is a favorite of mine - Malcolm X on the CBS Show, Front Page Challenge. Gives way to thoughts of how so many portray him still today to have been a man of violent and irrational character, as you watch this video - you can witness his sense of humor, charisma and his articulate manner.

A GO SEE TONIGHT! Movie Premier TRUST ~ Directed by David Schwimmer

Truth is my interest for this movie screening was peaked when I saw that David Schwimmer was the director of this film (remember when he was "Ross" from the infamous television sitcom, FRIENDS? One of my all-time faves!) and leading roles are by AMAZING actors: Clive Owens and Catherine Keener - I literally would have been content seeing this film blinded to any idea of what it was about - solely on the basis of the cast and crew!

Yet, and still, the subject matter in the film, TRUST, is intriguing albeit I do not have children - it is a hot topic of discussion and a rising concern for parents across the nation. Schwimmer attempts to uncover the tragedy and gore that is plaguing the "cyber world" as he tells the story of a 15-year old girl who finds herself in a "cyber chat room" with a 35-year old man portraying himself as a much younger grad student.

The story leads to the rape of the young girl and the story unfolds from there.

Houston, we know indie-films are far and few between in our fab city; especially now that Angelika Theater is no longer a part of our city. Kind of fancy to have such a high profile film at our feet! :)

And a Q&A with screenwriter on premier night as well.

.....I'm Just Sayin'......

With the brink of President Barack Obama under fire for his religious beliefs and origin, a friend shared with me that he has grown frustrated with the politics within the politics (i.e. race card).
He explained to me that as a black man, he does not see color or race - only a person. Furthermore, this is how God should have created us all - no white, no black or shades between - simply, human.

I rebutted that although many would agree with this ideal, I feel as though should we all be impaired to only see one another as human, and in turn; surely peace and humanity would be fully restored; without color - I’d feel robbed of my character.

Perhaps it is naive of me needing to define who I am with layers of the struggle and strife those before me have battled on my behalf, but as I sit still with the question, "Who am I?" , the response would simplify - shamelessly; if I was as my friend suggested, "simply human".

Without my ability to uphold my culture there would be - nothing really.

All that I am is a seed watered by a history that has afforded me talents and strengths through the survivings of weaknesses and struggles, by those before me and my very own.

The education that is founded (beyond the textbook reading our American academic career affords us) - grants me more peace and contentment than the possibility to disregard the color of my skin - even on the worst of days!

The voice I have now would be strained; virtually silenced without the ability or need to ask "why" or "what" (happened).
Conversations would be minimum and history would be dim. I cannot foresee why one person of my culture or creed would prefer likewise.

Surely our Creator, Mother Nature, or whatever you believe planted us each here as a collage / rainbow of people, held a purpose in doing so. Certainly aware than any contrasts would breed looks of question, desires of the mind would birth hate or fear - and nature would respond accordingly.

Simply put, everything happens for a reason.

We shaded people are no mistake, and there is beauty in finding the reward of what others may view as a misfortune.

We could always pose the question, "what if", but in the interim, perhaps more of us should seek answers to questions such as, "what happened..." and unveil through the discovery of history, who we are collectively - giving light to who each of us are inivdually.

I heart these guys! I look forward to seeing them do their thing LIVE at the fest!

Duke Ellington (April 29 1899 - May 24 1974)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Edward Kennedy "DUKE" Ellington ~ composer, pianist, and orchestra leader. Ellington held a long standing career throughout his lifetime, beginning his musical career at the early age of 15 with his first composition entitled, "Soda Fountain Rag" (influenced by his then cafe job as a soda jerk at Poodle Dog Cafe).

His story is an interesting read, and of course, the music is a must listen.

One of his most popular, "In a Sentimental Mood", always a classic for listening pleasure - Ellington and (John) Coltrane collaborate on their composition.

....Coachella 2011....

Coachella in one word: An experience.

107 degrees - BLAZING, back whipping sun! 7 hour drive to Indio, CA location! Thousands of people! Not a moment spent in silence as the music blares from ear to ear & A LOT of walking!
I am ready for Coachella 2012!!!

A "virgin" to not only Coachella Music Festival, but I, too, had never experienced a full blown music festival ever before. To have Coachella "pop my cherry" was an humbling experience! :)

My entourage included myself and big sister. We are polar opposites when it comes to music - so we both anticipated a little hesitation from each of our own camps when it came to deciding which acts to go see - considering about ten bands played simultaneously throughout the twelve hour music days allotted....
So disappointed that we missed opening day with such acts as: Lauryn Hill, The Black Keys, Cee-Loo. And, I heard Kings of Leon ripped the place down that night!

We arrived to the crowd the second day of the fest - despite heat and crowd, there was not a frown in sight and the atmosphere was chill. We enjoyed hearing a lot of bands (Wiz Khawlifa, Damien Marley, Raphael Saadiq). Yet, and still, I was there for one reason & one reason only - The Strokes!

I had goosebumps arriving to the gates that Sunday night when it was time to line for the show. Playing some of their classics such as "Someday", "New York City Cops". And a few recs off their newest CD: "Under Cover of Darkness" and "Games".

It was an amazing show! Including the jumbo trons during their show. There was live B&W feed of the show bred in with captured stills. It was formidable art. I want to meet whoever was behind that camera! Big kuddos to them! (**I will try to post footage - to follow **).

Arcade Fire was a band that I ran home to buy on ITunes - so electric! And, I highly suggest sampling "The Felice Brothers".

My sister and I were all grins and giggles as they were on stage. Their sound I can only describe as a mixing of "zydeco/country/rock" as they bleed the accordion sound with some bass guitar. Sounds funky, right?! I suggest listening to: "Frankie's Gun" and "Whiskey in My Whiskey".

Someone I had no true desire to show face to their show (and, YES, I am a hip hop fan) - Kanye West. Maybe his consistent media over exposure was dotting upon me that night or my over excitement for The Strokes cluttered any possible room for anyone else. But, I was not feeling him. Until. The Show.

Damn! His show gave that feeling as though we were transplanted to a video shoot during his 2 hour run! West made his entrance in flight, overhead the crowd as his dancers were on stage across him dancing to the newest single, "H.A.M.".

I could not help but utter, "Mr. West is in the building!".

West closed Coachella weekend out right - performed with such intensity & heart - as though he intended to never touch a mic again. Not to mention, he looked amazing! (his shirt later to be reported by gossip sites to be straight off the Celine Spring 2011 Runway Collection).

We heard some of my favorite West classics: "Jesus Walks", "Gold Digger" and "Flashing Lights".

Aside from the endless music afloat the entire weekend - that good energy from the people, and the mellow atmosphere makes it certainly a weekend I will not miss again.

Well, that is what President Obama wants to know, as it was formally announced earlier this month he would be in the running for President in the upcoming election.

I am mum on the political forefront, however; this article is curiously interesting.

Donald Trump states, "he has a great relationship with blacks".

Will Trump's strategy to victory rely on gaining the black vote from Obama?

I gain the sense this nearing election will not disappoint; diverting from the real issues and crisis at hand - the media will give way to the infamous race battle once more.

Whether a political partisan or not - this future election will be interesting to watch unfold.

I just stand optomistic that those that do chose to vote in 2012 will look at more than if the canidate's skin color matches their own, and seek the best suited for the position.

I was BEYOND thrilled seeing the poster for this event in the hall of one of my favorite coffeehouses here in Houston (big shouts to Cafe Brasil - Houston).

June 4-5th, at the Eleanor Tinsley Park will be the "FREE PRESS SUMMER FEST" happening again here in Houston, TX.

Tickets are already selling out for this must see show!

WEEZER is on the bill (need I say more?! Huge Fan!) who along with Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Big Boi & for the real "Down South" music lovers - Z-RO & Bun B on stage as well.

Guaranteed to be hot as HELL here in Houston that time of year - and with a thousand people in attendance, it will make for one NASTY, sticky crowd! I can't wait! (LOL).

My little sister originally played "Open Your Eyes" for me a few years ago, sung by one of her favorite artist, DWELE, and it was LOVE at first listen for me!

The lyrics are poetic; romantic & the music - lucid. Goosebumps everytime I hear the song - as if it is the 1st time all over again.
I recently ran across the original - was not aware there was one. Isn't there always?! (Maybe I am the only one who has been hiding under a rock on this?)

Here is the original by Bobby Caldwell. I am not sure which version I prefer....this is nice though... record scratching at end of play...so retro and authentic! Love it! :)

Throwback Music...

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., assassinated April 4, 1968, and forty-three years later, historians find themselves still in search for further evidence to what led to this day an American hero was murdered - witnessed by millions; and, the aftereffect the county and it's people faced following his passing.

I discovered this video clipping of a documentary filmed one day following Dr. King's death a documentary entitled, "The Night James Brown Saved Boston - 1968". I understand it was released in 2008; with commentary made by folks such as: Dr. Cornell West, Al Sharpton and the Mayor of Boston during that time. And clippings of live footage from the likes of: Dr. King, Richard Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson and Mr. James Brown himself.

Typically, I would have preferred to view the documentary in its entirety before commenting with high praise. Yet, after view of this 10 minute clip found on YOUTUBE - this is history for the books & I know it will not disappoint! To watch one of my recent musician faves, James Brown and the collaboration of documented history from such a defining time in the history of America and the black culture - I am in a frenzy to watch the complete film!

Artsy..Fartsy - The Menil (Houston)

First and foremost, if you have never made a visit to The Menil Collection (Houston) - GO!

More so, I am thrilled about the current exhibit, "The Whole World Was Watching - Civil Rights Era Photographs". Six photographer works are on exhibit, as they portray the atmosphere of the 1960's.

Though I have not witnessed the exhibit myself first-hand just ~ safe to assume, one should be "prepared to be moved".

As diverse in culture as the city of Houston is, I am perpetually discouraged by the lack of arts highlighting the African American culture. So, when an event such as this presents itself - it is imperative to take part!

The exhibit is on-going March 5th - September 25th 2011 - but DO NOT WAIT! GO!

I encourage you to SAVE THE DATE, March 30th 12 NOON - Bradford Young, cinematographer and Leslie Hewitt, artist, will be presenting the exhibit this day! If you do not know who they are, PLEASE follow the links below and be aroused to be in attendance.
